How To Ace Your Job Interview! - Catch Resource Management

How To Ace Your Job Interview!

Nervous for an upcoming interview? Read these tips and tricks to help you be as prepared as possible!

Before the Interview

  • Read the job description carefully
    • What particular skills are they looking for? Where do yours apply? What can you draw from your experience to match what’s required?
  • Research the company
    • Before any interview, you should research the company itself. What are their goals, values, culture? Is there any recent achievements of theirs that you can relate to in your own experience?
  • Do some practice questions
    • Have a look at some common interview questions and practice how you would answer them. Ask a friend or family member to do a mock interview with you to help you get into the mindset you’ll need.
  • Dress appropriately
    • Obviously, every job and office is different, but be aware of how you present yourself on the day. Avoid wearing casual clothes such as t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, or trainers. Looking smart will give a good first impression to your interviewer!

During the Interview

  • Stay Positive
    • Keep calm and remember to smile!
  • Don’t rush!
    • Give yourself time to think through your answer first. If appropriate, give real life examples of your own experiences and how you’ve tackled problems and tasks in your current role.
  • Ask them some questions
    • In many ways, the company is also being interviewed, by you! You could ask what a typical day on the job is like, or if the role offers chances for development. Ask how you as a candidate can stand out and show you’re the perfect fit for the position. If there’s any confusion, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification!
  • Don’t Lie!
    • Do not lie about your skills or experience, it does not get you started on the right foot. A sincere approach will always be best. Be honest about what you know and sell it!

After the Interview

  • Follow up
    • Don’t be afraid to send your interviewer(s) a message or email following the interview thanking them for their time, or checking when you might hear from them.
  • Reflect & Feedback
    • Regardless of the outcome, use every interview as a learning experience! Each interview will show you a different area you can improve on and boost your confidence in order to land your dream role. You can also contact your interviewer to ask for feedback, allowing you to focus on specifics of your interview technique.
  • Relax!
    • We all know that interviewing can be quite an intimidating prospect, so after you’ve completed one, be sure to give yourself time to de-stress!
